Glauben, Wissen und Sagen
By: Dittrich, Andreas
Published by: Max Niemeyer Verlag
Taking a philosophical epistemological perspective, this work examines Thomas Mann´s "The Magic Mountain" (Der Zauberberg), Hermann Broch´s trilogy, "The Sleepwalkers" (Die Schlafwandler), and Robert Musil´s "The Man Without Qualities" (Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften). These three texts not only constitute epoch-making novels, but are also novels of their epoch, in the sense that they deal with the significant historical currents of thought of their time in a literary manner. One of the most succinct characteristics of their epoch was a diversity of epistemological positions, never to be attained again afterwards. Using an interpretive approach, this study sheds light on how the three authors dealt with this spectrum in their aesthetic works.

Gottsched, Johann Christoph
By: Gottsched, Johann Christoph; Döring, Detlef (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter
Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766) is considered to be one of the greatest scholars of the Early German Enlightenment. As a professor for poetics in Leipzig, he worked towards a reformation of the German language and a renaissance in German drama. His extensive correspondence and social contacts made him an 'European event' and his papers are being presented here in a standard edition: 25 volumes, approx. 6,000 letters to and from Gottsched, predominantly in German, are being published with a critical apparatus and an academic commentary. This edition is being published in co-operation with the Saxonian Academy of Sciences and edited by members of the academy. The edition is scheduled to be published over 25 years and offers an ideal addition to the multi-volume edition of Gottsched's works, already published by de Gruyter.

Handbuch deutscher Kommunikationsverben
By: Harras, Gisela (ed.); Winkler, Edeltraud (ed.); Erb, Sabine (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter
Until now, an extensive semantic description of communication verbs in German - in particular, speech act verbs - has been lacking. This handbook closes these gaps. The focus of the book is on German speech act verbs. Moreover, the work also includes common verba dicendi, verbs used to refer to discourse-structuring acts, modal communication verbs and medial communication verbs.

Hermann Broch und die Künste
By: Staková, Alice (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter
As a novelist, Hermann Broch (1886-1951) was a poeta doctus who also made a name for himself as a philosophical essayist, human rights theoretist, mass psychologist and literary critic. At the same time, he occupied himself with art, architecture, music and film. The present volume is the first study to profile Brochs interest in the arts and to examine their complex influence on his work. The papers demonstrate how particularly strongly the arts affected each other in works of 20th century classical modern literature in the way of intertextuality, ecphrasis and interpenetration.

Hofmannsthals Sprachgeschichte
By: Heinz, Tobias
Published by: Walter de Gruyter
The study provides a deciphering reading of the language-reflexive and poetological poems of the Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, whose texts are interpreted as encrypted signatures of the epoch. The linguistic artistry of the lyric work is opened up and made legible as a document of linguistic history. The linguistic analysis starts from the conviction that the selected poems by Hofmannsthal arise from an individual experience of language which gains its aesthetic presence in the lyrical text. By approaching an outstanding protagonist of modernism, the account adds an important chapter in German-Austrian language history. The poems as an expression of a literary linguistic awareness are placed in a context with reflexive statements on language, critical linguistic notes and documents of engagement with language culture. This (linguo-)political, social and cultural contextualisation provides the prerequisite for sketching Hofmannsthal´s literary language work - here in his lyric poetry - as a paradigm of classical modernism.

Ich und sie, du und ich
By: Janota, Johannes
Published by: Walter de Gruyter
Whereas the medieval minnelied speaks of the unfulfilled wooing of an unapproachable lady, the modern love song deals with the chequered relationship of a lover with his beloved. The present study is the first to enquire into the different literary and historical factors which led to the minnelied being superseded by the love song and to the love song's success in the modern age. Contrary to what was maintained by previous research, these transition processes can be traced back to the first half of the 14th century.

Information Structure and Language Change
By: Hinterhölzl, Roland (ed.)
Published by: Mouton de Gruyter
The volume presents new approaches to explaining word order variation and change in the Germanic languages and thus relates to one of the most prominent and widely discussed topics in the theory of language change and diachronic syntax. The novelty of our approach consists in three main points. First of all, we aim at describing functional variety in the field of word order and verb placement in the early Germanic languages not as a result of language contact, but rather as a language-internal phenomenon related to stylistic and grammatical conditions in information packaging. Second, given that information structure is directly accessible in texts from historical corpora that are available only in written form and bear no or little information on prosody and intonation, it presents various methods of retrieving information-structural categories in such texts. Third, it presents empirical studies on the relation between word order and information structure of the four main texts of the Old High German period and embeds these results in the wider picture of word order change in Germanic. The volume will be of interest to students of German, English, and general linguistics as well as to researchers interested in diachronic syntax, philology of Older German, language change, information structure, discourse semantics, language typology, computational linguistics and corpus studies.
